Alright, so I haven't had the creative drive to write recently. I started doing audio, and like I said in the most recent one. Some topics will be easier to write about and some will be easier to discuss more in audio. So I'm gonna try something different today. Everyone is doing countdowns of some kind, we all seen them, so I decided to do one here. I don't know if this will be a regular thing or not, and I'm gonna try not to talk about each entry that (in my opinion) need to change in WWE but probably won't because of the man pictured above. I don't think this will be a regular thing unless I get ideas of my own to do more or people suggest them on twitter (@MikeJC821.) Regardless lets start this one, 10 Things In WWE That Need to Change Tomorrow, But Won't. In no particular order by the way, and some of these might only be things that bother me so I hope that people will respect that no matter how outlandish the entries may be.
10. Commentary
For way too long, WWE has had a commentary problem. Everyone sounds the same, as far as newer people go, everyone says crap that Vince McMahon tells them to say. Everyone sounds dumb, three person teams continue to not work, there's no real personality. Some are worse then others, but the biggest problem is everyone is just there, and not helping at all. On RAW we have Tom Phillips who would be good if he had a good partner to bounce of, and he knew a move or two, Byron Saxton who is the most blandest commentator of all time, and is so molded to the way Vince McMahon wants him to sound that he just sounds stupid every time he opens his mouth, and Jerry Lawler who should be gone because he is no longer needed. Smackdown isn't that bad surprisingly, and NXT has the problem of just too many people. They all need to be two person teams, and they all need to have their own personality (which isn't really a problem in NXT). Get rid of Byron, get rid of Jerry Lawler.
9. Underutilized Talent
WWE for a long time has been focusing on the wrong talent, this has resulted in nobody new getting opportunities, and the wrong people being relied on to carry the show (more on that later), in turn nobody feels like a star anymore. How can someone look like a star, act like a star, and actually be a star when they aren't getting the chance to prove it. For too long people like Cesaro, Ricochet, Cedric Alexander, Chad Gable, Mustafa Ali, Dana Brooke, and some recent departures like Rusev, Sarah Logan and Deonna Purrazo (just to name a few), have just been treated like "jobbers to the stars", treated like they don't matter, when all the talent named, and more that weren't are just being wasted. Talent matters, when you are as good as people like Cesaro is, that should warrant opportunities. Instead of all the same people getting everything, you can love Roman Reigns, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and Seth Rollins, but when are the work horses like the people named earlier going to shine?
8. Using Contracted Talent as Jobbers
Recently, we've seen more and more of local Florida talent being used as enhancement talent, however when WWE was still on the road in arenas across the country a lot of times they would use lower card talent as the enhancement talent. To me that isn't helping anyone, continue to use local talent in these roles instead of hurting the talent you have. More so recently again because of the current climate, they've been using NXT talent that are currently not being used as enhancement talent as well, and this is something I don't want either. If NXT talents aren't ready, don't use them this way wait until they are ready and have the tools needed to be featured.
7. Make Things Make Sense
For as long as I can remember, WWE has done things their own way, without really giving a real explanation for why they are doing that thing. I've said it before, continuity matters. Give me a reason to care about things that are happening. Make things matter, make it make sense. Someone who lost at mania shouldn't be getting a title shot a month later just because he attacked the champ, have someone earn a title shot, and then build a story off of that. It's inexcusable to me that the reason Seth Rollins, who as I said earlier, lost at WrestleMania, therefore Drew McIntyre going on TV and saying "Seth is a premiere talent and doesn't have to earn a shot and that's why I'm challenging him." is a problem. Stop giving people who lose, title shots, make matches matter, and give me a legitimate reason to care about said match, and give it stakes.
6. Lack of Women's Tag Teams
Ever since the Women's Tag Team Titles were introduced, the feeling was Vince McMahon is only doing it to shut up the fans, because contrary to popular belief and I think it's well known by now, he doesn't care about our opinion. We were under the impression once this was introduced that it would matter. and since day one it hasn't at all. The first champions Sasha and Bayley wanted to establish them as something that mattered for women, who aren't getting the treatment they deserve, have something else for the women to fight for and mean something, then they lost them at WrestleMania in their first defense. Then the team that beat them, The IIconics, help them for four months and never ever defended them but lost non title match one after the other to put over other people without losing the belts. In that time, Bayley and Sasha (at the time) were sent to separate shows (and Sasha took a leave of absense), one tag team down. We were also told that the belts would be defended on every show NXT included, that never happened, Bayley and Sasha even had an appearance on NXT to proclaim this. Nikki Cross and Alexa formed a team which is working and they are now two time champs, who beat the Kabuki Warriors (Asuka and Kairi Sane) who had the longest and most prominent reign. However, teams continued to break up in that time. Dakota Kai and Tegan Knox, broke up and feuding with each other. Now Sonya and Mandy, broken up and feuding with each other. It's gotten to the point where make-shift teams have been put together for nothing then isn't acknowledged again. This needs to be fixed big time or the belts need to be scrapped.
5. Follow Through On Stories That Are Teased
For years WWE, has done this thing with certain storylines, where they tease something, and it goes absolutely nowhere, or they reveal or do something and don't follow up on things at all. Some examples I can think of right off the top of my head, when the Nexus helped Kane defeat the Undertaker in a buried alive match, or countless times people earned title opportunities and didn't get a championship match. This is something WWE has done forever and it needs to stop. This hacker gimmick thing they are doing right now, is very interesting, and the WWE thing to do would be build to the reveal, and then it resulting into nothing. Whoever it is, whether it's one person or multiple, needs to come out of this with something meaningful, it needs to go somewhere, and build whoever it is.
4. Over Excitement and Misinformation on Commentary
Okay, as I said earlier, some of these things might only bother me, and I hope people respect that but anyway. This has been a problem that really only applies to Michael Cole at times, but everyone does it from time to time. A lot of times, a spot, will happen and Michael Cole especially will overreact or get over excited for a spot that we've seen so many times, then act like it's something we've never seen before. I can't stand this at all and wish it would stop, when someone does a suicide dive, usually to get us to commercial (look out for more on this later), he acts like its something that doesn't happen in every single match. Or the constant use of the tower of doom spot with the pointless powerbomb part, that isn't exciting because it isn't believable at all, but commentary makes it out to seem like the person doing the powerbomb part just hurt everyone. Another thing, is when they give misinformation as "something that's never happened before" try to at least pretend to care about history. I guess this could be Vince and his stupid rules, but when we've seen something a million times or even a few times, and they act like it's new they sound stupid. The perfect example of this was at WrestleMania this year, Byron Saxton said "we've never seen someone have two consecutive title defenses at WrestleMania before. ", when that is absolutely not true, we all know Yokozuna did that in 1993, and Byron sounds stupid for saying that at all, and if he meant something else that needs to be clairified. I need both of these things to stop.
3. Too Many Pay-Per-Views/Remove Pay-Per-View Themes
Now I'm not an expert on the money side of things in the wrestling business, and I get there's a certain revenue that comes with each pay-per-view and etc., but there is and has been too many pay-per-views for too long. More so now then ever, with the Saudi Arabia shows, which usually, mean nothing and TV time is wasted to build to them because long term, it results in nothing, but even before that. the number of main roster pay-per-views was just too many. We need time to build to big matches, we need time to build to big shows. Three weeks is not enough to make matches seem important. Not including NXT Takeovers, which actually has a great setup to the build of their shows. WWE needs downsize the number of shows and start caring about the build to said shows. To pile on top of that, for over a decade now, WWE has made a lot of their in between pay-per-views based around a specific match type and instead of using those match types to build to something personal or using a real reason to have those matches. We just get no dq matches in July, Hell In A Cell matches in October, TLC matches in December, and Elimination Chamber matches in February. This doesn't make these match types special anymore, why do them, if it doesn't mean anything. If a feud doesn't call for a Hell In A Cell match, it shouldn't have one just because it's "that time of year again", I hate when WWE uses that turn of phrase. Pay-Per-Views should be built around the stories not the theme of the show. The concept of the match shouldn't be used to build the show, only the feud that it's needed for. Bring back original pay-per-view names, and make those matches special again.
2. Moves and Spots Being Overused, and Over Saturated
This is something that has bothered me for way too long, think about this, I mentioned earlier how almost every single WWE match on RAW and Smackdown goes to commercial with a suicide dive, then they come back from commercial with a rest hold, almost every single time. I hate that because it's so formulaic and boring. At the same time moves like the superkick, which is used as a finisher by Dolph Ziggler, but Seth Rollins does it as a signature in every single match, and there's an endless list of wrestlers who use it as a transitional move or as a near fall in every single match. This is annoying, because I'm supposed to "suspend my disbelief" that Dolph Ziggler's superkick is more effective then literally everyone elses, this makes the move seem less impressive to use and makes everyone who can't finish their opponent with it look stupid for using it. The same exact thing could be said about the spear, Roman Reigns clearly has the best spear and should be the only person to do it, everyone else just throws it in as a transitional move, when they could just do something different. It's safe to say Edge's spear never looked good, it still doesn't compared to Roman's. This needs to be changed, people need to be more creative, and stop doing the same moves.
1. Over Reliance On Part Timers
Going into WrestleMania this year, both World Championships were held by part time talent. For years, WWE has spent too much time focusing on people like Undertaker, Brock Lesnar, Triple H, and recently Goldberg, to sell big shows. There's so much talent that for a while WWE just scooped up so they couldn't go somewhere else. Therefore making it impossible to get those people over. Whenever Brock Lesnar is a champion, he never ever wrestles on RAW, he shows up for 5 minutes doesn't talk and then wrestles at the pay-per-view and takes another 4 month break. Whenever you have the championship on that, there's nothing to fight for, there's nothing to be excited about. Goldberg has only wrestled 4 times since 2016, in that time he's a two time champion and he lost the belt in the first defense. Goldberg is not a good wrestler, because he never wanted to be a wrestler, he's a failed football player who is praised for what reason I don't know and I've said this before, he's never ever had a good match. Then there's The Undertaker, I'm not gonna talk bad about him as a performer, he's done everything and earned it, the problem is, he doesn't need to anymore, he's been in the wrestling business for 30+ years, and he's in his 30th year in WWE currently. His performances haven't been the same for quite sometime, I can admit, that I don't need him to do this anymore, he's earned retirement, he's earned everything. Also, he has to know that what he's doing now isn't helping anyone. The whole point of this is these people are focused on while others get nothing, while this loaded roster just sits there and can't buy TV time. Instead of relying on those people, "bring the eyes to the product", build the people that want to be there, care about your entire roster, and stop wasting our time.
Okay so as I've said multiple times in the past, I don't say these things because I don't want to watch wrestling, I love wrestling more than anything, I want to see it flourish, all these things I've named today (in no particular order) are problems, problems that need to be addressed to get WWE to where it should be. So don't read this and say, "stop watching if you don't like it.", that's not the point of this, at all. I hope that one day these things get addressed and make WWE better then ever, and again these might be only things that bother me, but there's a lot of people out there that will agree with me. I hope you enjoyed this and yes it's long but it means something to me, and I hope everyone enjoys my work.
